Home / Motore di ricerca / Redefining South: vessel visits Archiviazioni

On July 15, vessel, with curators Viviana Checchia and Raluca Voinea, visited Archiviazioni, a project focused on documentation and dialogue. The project is the result of an idea conceptualized by curator Giusy Checcola and collaboratively curated with Luigi Presicce. Based in Lecce, part of the Apulia region, Archiviazioni’s formal space is within the laboratory of Art and Architecture of Lecce.

Giusy Checcola gave the curators a tour of the space, originally a tobacco factory, and explained the aims and goals of Archiviazioni. Its area of focus is “the contemporary south”, which defies traditional geographical definitions and transcends into a philosophical, political and relational space that parallels the struggle to define European identity. To accomplish this, Archiviazioni uses a copious variety of artistic disciplines in order to function as a space based on the exchange of ideas and experimentation.

Archiviazioni uses a variety of methods. Primarily, it utilizes the Archive, a Southern Italian documentation center for contemporary art. This archive is divided into three sections: projects by scholars, artists, critics, and historians based in Southern Italy, artistic projects devoted to the territorial urban dynamics of the South and collection of relevant publications and artistic material pertinent to the alternative evolution of the archive. This information is used as a base for action in order to open a debate on the redefinition of the South. In addition, Archiviazioni is composed of an exhibition space, which shows films as well as collected archival materials. It has space for seminars, workshops and laboratories, allowing for dual artistic discussion and production.

Archiviazioni plans to be open to the public for two days each week, starting in September. It is similar to vessel in that it is a space-based in Southern Italy that aims at the integration of the south with the Western and international art world. At vessel, we see this as an encouraging sign of Southern Italy’s efforts to cultivate dialogue on redefinition.
