On the 26th of May, vessel was pleased to collaborate with Radical Intention to offer a seminar at the Academia di Belle Arti. Radical Intention was a project conceived by Valerio Del Baglivo, and represented in Bari by project researcher Maria Pecchioli and supporters Iacopo Seri and Angelo Sarleti. The initiative is focused on the redefinition of teaching and an investigation of the process of learning, education and methods by which knowledge is acquired. In response to what they view as the crisis of the modern educational system, the collective has launched the project "Becoming Rather than Being" which focuses on the artist as an agent of independent learning and the artistic process as an element of ongoing self-education.
As a basis for their research, Radical Intention looks to groundbreaking online education initiatives such as the L.A.-based "Free School", which attempts to promote learning free from the administration, fees, exams and the general control mechanisms imposed on standard educational systems. Community members are urged to offer topics of either investigation or instruction and then an unfettered exchange of ideas can occur on a specific date between all interested parties. In this same spirit, Radical Intention seeks to promote "knowledge without a framework", or a learning process that does not rely on a hierarchy of individuals or knowledge or affiliation with a specific educational institution. The process of self-education which occurs viewed as the most beneficial acquisition of knowledge. The transference of knowledge between individuals sharing openly is also critical to the overall success of self-education. In this manner, society itself becomes a viable learning platform.
As part of their investigation, Radical Intention challenged the meeting attendants to participate in a learning exchange similar to that offered by Free School programs. Each audience member submitted a topic and several keywords to teach or be taught within their respective group. Several topics were then chosen to provide a focal point and groups collaborated to actively share and listen. There was great freedom in discussing matters which arose naturally and appealed to the general curiosity, interest and experience of each group. Radical Intention hopes such learning investigation and promotion will open a discussion of the current academic system.
